Pathology results not good

The tumor appears to be a grade 4 neuroblastoma - grade 4 being the fastest growing, most aggressive. The one bright spot in this diagnosis is that neuroblastomas normally don't metastasize - that is, they don't spread to other parts of the body. We're going to be meeting with an oncologist in the next day or two - we don't know for sure what sort of treatments they are going to want to do, but radiation therapy is likely, and chemotherapy is a possibility. They probably won't start treatment for at least another week or so, to allow Kol to regain his strength and recover from the surgery. Dr. Vitali didn't want to give me numbers (in terms of percentages, etc.), he emphasized that each person reacts differently to these cancers, so at this point in time I have no idea what sort of prognosis is possible.

I guess it goes without saying that this is not what we were expecting, or at least not what we were hoping for. I'm still in a state of shock. Kristen is still in Outlook until later this afternoon - our "tire guy" should have the van back on it's feet (so to speak) before school is out, and then I believe she's coming straight up here. I haven't told Kol yet about this - I think I want to wait until Kristen is here, so that we can both be there to comfort him and answer his questions. For now, I'm just trying to hold myself together until I can find a safe time/place to let my guard down and start processing some of the emotions that I'm holding back.

Your prayers, more than ever, are coveted. Thanks for your love and support.

We are tempted to hop in the van and drive down to be with you, but we must stay committed to our work commitments. So, for now, know that you all are in our thoughts and prayers.

  4. Wow.
Thankfully the Spirit intercedes for us when we don't know what to say or how to pray.
I will pray particularly for you and Kristen so that you are able to process this in whatever way(s) is/are most true to you. I will pray for God to be incredibly present in the conversations you have with Kol and the girls.

  5. What to say? You mention that you don't know what sort of prognosis is possible. Take this as you may, but I like what Dr. Vitali has to say; everyone reacts differently to the cancers and the treatments. I'd encourage you to not to stress over any stats that you may hear.
You've commented that you have felt the prayers of the people surrounding you, giving you peace. It's amazing isn't it? I know that may not ease the emotions raging through you right now, but that is ultimately what will sustain you through this whole ordeal. (speaking from experience)

  21. Kirk, Kristen, Julianna, Mari, Kol, Birgitte and Annika - A Truly Beautiful Family:
As I sit here tonight I am torn between wanting to race right up to the hospital to see you all, and hug you, and be "present" with you....and yet I want to respect the time you need to process this as a family.....so please know that my heart longs to be with you all, and that at a moment's notice Greg or I would be there for you.....day or night.....
My head and heart are full of scriptures right now, but I am led to share with you something from your Uncle Marvin......first he would remind you that "God never gives us more than we can carry" and then he would reassure you that together "we're going to make it"......he believed it because he lived it.....he would want you to believe it too.
I hope this speaks to your hearts right now, and that God super-imposes a "stillness" within you to feel His Presence.
Loving You All and Hoping to See You Soon,
    Your Cousin Joanne and Greg

  29. I'm here via the Sonlight board. Just read the backstory and am terribly grieved at what a blow you've been dealt. There really are no words. It sounds like you have a good deal of tangible support. Know, too, that prayers will be offered on your behalf from those of us at a distance. I will ask my own five boys to pray on Kol's behalf, too.

    Peace be with you,

  34. Hello Kirk and family,

My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this time of struggle and despair. We trust that God's will is carried out and as Romans 8:28 says "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to His purpose". I can not imagine the range of emotions that as a father you must daily go through. My heart weeps to see Kol in this state. I pray that God will give you strentgh, wisdom and patience and comfort in over flowing abundance. The church in Elbow (Bethel Lutheran) has added you to the prayer chain.... there are some wonderful prayer warriors/angels at work on Kol's behalf. Please let us know if we can do anything to help. May we trust in God as Jeremiah 29:11 says "For I know the plans I have for you decalres the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future". God bless all of you.

  36. I feel so blessed to have come to know your wonderful family. And especially my close friendship with Kol - my heart aches for him and for you all. You are ALWAYS in my thoughts and prayers. You are SO loved. I hope you can take some comfort in knowing that so many care deeply for you as you face such difficulty. I have found comfort in Psalm 91 -On Eagle's Wings, but then I am sure you know it well.. Love, Louise

  37. Kirk and Kristen,
I can not imagine the situation that you are in. Thank you for sharing Kol's journey with us. In reading your blog and the comments, it is good that you know that you and your family are loved, thought of and prayed for by many people. I am at work, looking at a photo of a former student who survived a very similar diagnosis and is doing extremely well in high school - years later. The chorus of an old hymn is echoing in my mind as I look at her ---He has done marvelous things. I too will praise him with a new song.

I know it may seem easy to say, but Scripture tells us that the prayers of righteous people avails much. The best words you can hear from anyone may just be that they are praying for you. We are also in that group and may God get the glory for what he is about to do, whatever it may be.
